About the photo:

Cape Town - South Africa

What does a herd of charging Elephants, a growling Leopard and a Lion’s kill have to do with me? Well, let me tell you about my trip to Africa and the story behind this photo!

Africa has always been a dream of mine to visit. Something about experiencing the untamed wild and being in the unknown seemed so enticing.

Now it’s nice to talk about going to Africa but planning, paying, and traveling is a whole different animal. It took us about a year and a half to plan the trip, get it all paid for and actually make it happen. COVID did NOT help. Constant postponements, new travel regulations and more.

But, we finally arrived in April of 2021 once travel restrictions had loosed up a bit. We linked up with a few seasoned guides at our lodge and began our hunt for adventure and the perfect shot (with a camera of course).

At first our searches were fruitless. Of course, we saw some Kudu, Zebra, Impala and Monkeys but we were looking for the Big 5: Lion, Buffalo, Elephant, Leopards and Rhinos. So, we continued on. As our night came to an end, we spotted a single elephant walking away from us in the distance, we followed. As we came around the bend, we were rewarded with an entire heard of 21 elephants including babies. We stayed far away while we took some photos but the matriarch of the heard didn’t think we were far enough away and charged us.

About 50 feet from us she halted, reared up and trumpeted loudly, warning us to move away. Pictures taken, we retreated giving her the space she requested.

The following days involved tracking a Lioness and her cubs having found her kill and being growled at by a Leopard while taking photos at a lake. The experience, some would call scary, some would never want to do, but for me, it was magical.

Africa is a beautiful country, and this photo was one I took on the last night we spent in the bush and it will remind me of the experience from here on out.

Printing Information:

Images are infused into specially coated surfaces, providing the most durable and longest lasting print medium. The aluminum panels are extremely durable, offering scratch and abrasion resistance without hiding your image behind glass. Sublimation metal also offers the highest fade resistance compared to every other photo medium.

Dye-sublimation printing is a computer printing technique which uses heat to transfer dye onto many materials. In order to transfer the image from the paper to the aluminum, it requires a heat press process that is a combination of time, temperature and pressure. The heat press applies this special combination, to “transfer” the sublimation dyes at the molecular level into the aluminum.

The images are fade resistant- the latest testing shows they will last a lifetime with resistance to yellowing and climate damage. They are chemical resistant- the surfaces can be cleaned with ammonia, bleach, acetone or any all-purpose cleaner. The images are also moisture resistant.

The aluminum is .045" thick and is finished with a float mount on the back for hanging. The Aluminum panels are lightweight, durable, and made with recycled material and 100% recyclable.
