If you’ve ever been to Lake Tahoe, you know that it is truly indescribable. That’s how I felt when I first arrived and saw the incredible landscape before me. The crisp blue lake. The huge pines towering above me and the smell! Crisp and clean inviting me to stay.
I knew I needed to capture that in a photo. One that hadn’t been taken before. One that expresses all the senses of actually being there.
But how do you do that? How do you create this from a 2-dimensional image. Not to mention, every image I took had tons of tourist crowding the frame.
So I did the only thing I knew how to do, I started exploring. I’ve always been an avid hiker and love finding unique views that not everyone sees. So, I started climbing up and down rocks, taking the path less travelled and searching for that right spot.
Unfortunately, nothing was jumping out at me and saying “I’M THE SPOT!”. Then again, that rarely happens.
I ended up picking a spot that I felt might work. I wasn’t super confident, but I knew it was my best chance. On arrival, the place had become overrun with tourist arriving for the sunset. This was discouraging but it was too late to change. The light was fading....
I moved past the people and hiked slightly down onto the rocks as the light began to fade faster and faster. A few jumps here, a couple of maneuvers there and one jump over a less than comfortable opening and I found my spot.
The moment had come. I set up the camera and click!
In the beginning I had an idea of the photo I wanted to create and this was not it. This did not even come close. This was far above and beyond what I had expected.
