Are you a morning person? I am not. And I don’t mean the wake up at a reasonable 8am, I mean the wake up before the first indication that night is over. That kind of morning person. I like my sleep but being a photographer, I am kind of forced to wake up for the best light and epic sunrises.
This was one of those mornings. I knew I wanted to take a photo of this pier as it’s an icon in Flagler Beach, Florida. I wanted good light and I didn’t want a ton of people. This is the advantage of Sunrise to Sunset.
The problem was, I'm not a morning person. So, when my alarm went off, I went through the same routine I do every time when I wake up this early. “Do I really want to get up?” “Will the sunrise be actually worth it?” “Who’s going to make the coffee?” “Man, this bed is comfy...” Those kinds of thoughts, and sometimes they win.
This morning they did not. I knew I wanted the photo; I had checked the weather and it was supposed to be slightly cloudy which is perfect. I forced myself up, got my coffee, grabbed my bag, and made my way.
The first spot I had scouted was no good, I had to move. The night began retreating as a faint blue glow started to appear on the horizon, stars winking out of existence. As I made my way into the sand, I spotted some footprints in the sand and thought they would make for a perfect accent to the photo. I stuck the tripod in the sand as the sky lit with color, lined up the shot and just before I took the photo, a gust of wind picked the flag up to wave good morning to me.
I switched the photo to black and white because it gave it a much more dramatic feel and even though the colors were phenomenal, I feel the black and white replicates the feeling I wanted to create better. I hope you agree!
