Ever have those days that just don’t go as planned? You coordinate every detail and then, at the last minute, everything falls apart. This story begins like that.
After a few days of research, I nailed down the location and all the details of a photo I wanted to take. My goal was to create a unique beach photo. Not a traditional beach photo. One that makes you feel like you were sitting on the beach, enjoying your favorite drink. The warm breeze gently blowing, while you enjoy a beautiful sunset. That kind of photo.
So, I headed out with plenty of time before sunset to scope out a proper location. As I walked along the beach, looking for that perfect spot, I started to realize that there was nothing. Sure, some palms here, some tall grass there, but nothing substantial. Even the sky was barren of all clouds. A worst-case scenario for any photographer.
I walked about a mile to the end of the beach and not one thing spoke to me. As I walked back, the sun was moving closer and closer to the horizon, like the sand in an hourglass running out. I decided to enjoy the sunset for myself, so I found a nice spot to just sit and relax and not worry about the photo. I could come back another time.
Just before the sun touched the horizon, I noticed a very interesting beach tree on my right. It rose up and fanned out to the left, almost like a flag posted to show me the way. That’s when I noticed a small hole where the sun was just about to settle perfectly. The sky had turned a beautiful blue with the orange accent of the glowing sun. I quickly grabbed my camera and fired off a couple shots.
Sometimes removing the pressure and simply enjoying your surroundings can allow you to accomplish your task better than you expected. That’s why I called this photo: Breaking Free
