What makes a good photo? Is it the composition or the colors? Is it the person behind the camera or is it the adventure leading up to it? Or is it something else entirely? I believe it’s a little mix of all of it.
But what if there’s no epic story or adventure that led you to take that photo. What if the photo was simply shot because the location was iconic or beautiful. Well, that’s the story of Multnomah Falls and this picture.
This is one of the most amazing waterfalls in Oregon and its right off the road. You can park and walk to this location in under 5 minutes. But that’s also the problem, it’s easy to access. Thousands of people flock to this location and it’s consistently packed! Getting a clear shot of this waterfall without several people in the photo or on the bridge above is extremely tough.
Thus, my predicament upon arrival. I didn’t want a fine art print with people in it, but I knew I wanted the photo! How can you not? So, weaving my way through the throngs of people I searched for a spot with a clear view. Nothing. The landing which overlooks the waterfall was slammed! I looked and looked and couldn’t find anything until I spotted a sort of barrier. It just might work.
I made my way over to it and climbed up. I set up the tripod and camera, balancing one leg of the tripod on my foot as there was not enough room for all three tripod legs. I adjusted the camera and set a long shutter to get the smooth water effect. I needed to remain perfectly still so there was no movement. Any shake and the photo would be blurry and ruined. I held my breath, timing it just right as people moved off the bridge, I took the photo.
It may not be the most epic story or the most amazing adventure, but the photo speaks for itself. It is: Beauty and Wonder!
